It’s friday night in the Lorrainese city of Metz. The home team, the FC Metz is currently placing third and takes on Paris Red Star, currently fifth in the French second league, the „Ligue 2“, for a top game. Accordingly full is the stadium, at least 15.000 people find their way to the „Stade Saint Symphorien“, which is located right next to the Mosel. The stadium consists of four sometimes very steep individual stands. What’s so special about the stadium is that the team’s ultras are located on the stands behind both of the goals, enabling them to create pressure from both sides of the pitch. This really is necessary however, since most of the atmosphere fades away through the open corners of the stadium. „FC Metz – Red Star FC

Red Star Fans in Metz, Frankreich

After the game, we meet four of the roughly 40 Red Star Paris supporters that were in the stadium tonight. Axel and his three friends came in from Paris by car, they tell us about the drama around Red Star Paris’s stadium, the „Stade Bauer“, located in Saint-Ouen, around 500 metres outside of Paris. The venerable stadium with a good atmosphere is not authorized to be used in the French „Ligue 2“. The club’s fan base has been fighting for the maintenance and repair of the stadium for years. Saint-Ouen’s city council however, would rather tear down the stadium and use the desirably situated property for a more profitable cause without building a new stadium. That way, Red Star Paris is „homeless“ for it’s first season playing in second league since 1999. The „home games“ are taking place in a stadium located within the city of Beauvais, 80 kilometres!!! away from the club’s actual stadium. Most of the club’s fans boycott the games taking place in that stadium. That way, the four supporters end up seeing more away games than so called home games. They tell us that a decent amount of fans want the club to be relegated back to the third division, so that the club can play in it’s actual stadium again.

Below are two photos taken during my visit of the „Stade Bauer“ in 2013.

Charly is a founding member of the Red Star fan club „Perry Boys“, which was formed by a group of anti-racist skinheads and other like-minded people in 1993. According to him, not many of the founding members are still active, „though we are still alive“. We also happen to talk about a poster of the ska band „86 Crew“, who he is the frontman of.

Paris Red Star is one of France’s oldest football clubs. One of its four funding fathers was Jules Rimet, who is also one of the founding members of the World Cup, naming its former trophy as well. the club has a long history of three domestic cup wins and numerous years of playing in first division. At the moment however, the team has to settle for playing in the French third division, the „National“.
On this cold friday night, Red Star Paris takes on its local rival Paris FC at home in the revered „Stade Bauer“ in Saint-Ouen, two bus stops north of the „Porte de Clignancourt“ in northern Paris. Around 1,200 spectators are in the stadium to watch tonight’s battle against relegation in the shadow of a stairway-formed skyscraper.
The club is particularly proud of  its tradition as a worker’s association and of one of their members having been a French Résistance fighter called Rino della Negra, who was murdered by the Nazis. There are several bouquets of flowers at the cash desks tonight to remind of the anniversary of his death. Whether this is a coincidence or not, one of tonights chants – my personal favorite – is a Paris Red Star chant sung in the melody of Bella Ciao.

Red Star is clearly the better side, deservedly leading 1-0 at the break. Since the only things sold at the stadium are spicy sausages warmed up in the microwave and non-alcoholic beer, many spectators prefer going to a pub called „l’Olympic“ right acroos the street, where you can buy bottled Heineken. The final score is 2-0.
