Andrè and Anja have been wearing traditional vests for four years. Prior to having stitched their vests, they collected stickers to stitch on them for roughly a year. The pins on Andrès hat however have been around for longer. He shows me photos of several very polished self made carnival costumes of the two of them on his phone and tells me how they had „always been extroverted“ and „when we do things, we do them properly“.

1.FC Köln – Féhervár FC
RheinEnergie Stadion

It’s a festive atmosphere as Cologne hosts its first international game in five years, taking on the Hungarian Féhervár football club for a Europa Conference league playoff game on a Thursday night. The majority of the fans in the stadium tonight followed the red dress code set by the clubs ultras as the stands glow in red. Many supporters wear a shirt that says „Europa auffressen“(which can be translated to „devour Europe“) and is sold by supporters prior to kickoff. The traditional hymns „In unserm Veedel“ and „Mer stonn zo dir“ sound impressive sung by the whole stadium.
The game goes according to plan for Cologne at first as they manage to go up 1-0 early thanks to their aggressive playing style. The tide soon turns on them however as one of their players is sent off with a red card, enabling Féhervár to score two goals in quick succession to take the lead. Despite a hard-fought and dominating second half performance by the home team, who receive loud support by their supporters in the stands throughout, they don’t manage to score another goal, causing them to lose the game 1-2. The guests from Székesféhervár and their supporters get to celebrate together, much to the displeasure of the Cologne supporters still in the stadium.

Gabor, Zoltan, Alexander und Adam
RheinEnergie Stadion

The four Fehervar FC fans drove 14 hours to Cologne all the way from Székesfehérvár. They plan to leave again as soon as tomorrow after staying in a hotel overnight. Gabor and Alexander, as well as Zoltan and Adam are each pairs of fathers and sons who regularly visit their teams away games together.

Adam is wearing the shirt of an ultra supporters group. He’s hoping for a draw in tonights match. His father Zoltan once was in the stadium for the 1985 Uefa-Cup final between Real Madrid and Fehervar FCs predecessor club, Videoton, „but that’s history“.

Ulf, RheinEnergie Stadion

The first match Ulf ever watched still took place in FC Cologne’s old stadium, the „Müngersdorfer Stadion“, where his team played Borussia Dortmund. He’s been owning a season ticket for the past six years.

René has been a FC köln supporter „for as long as I can remember“. In the first match he ever watched in the stadium with his dad, FC Köln legend Toni Schumacher was given an official farewell by the club in Cologne’s old „Müngersdorfer Stadion“.
He has a season ticket for the supporters stand and is a member of an ultra group called „Wilde Horde“.

Harry is a member of the Ultra group „COLONIACS“ and has been a supporter for 30 years.
His son Kilian is also an Ultra, but belongs to another group called „Wilde Horde“. He’s been watching Cologne’s games in the stadium for the past seven years.
Like René, Harry finds that the current discussion about Ultras is over the top and overdone.

Sabrina, RheinEnergieStadion

Since five years ago, Sabrina has been a full on FC Köln supporter. Responsible for igniting her passion the team is her boyfriend Mathias, who’s been going to the stadium with her ever since.
