Freitag Abend im Lothringischen Metz. Der heimische, drittplatzierte FC empfängt im Spitzenspiel der Ligue 2, der zweiten Französischen Liga, Paris Red Star, den Tabellenfünften. Dementsprechend groß ist der Andrang. Immerhin 15.000 Zuschauer finden den Weg in das direkt an der Mosel gelegene Stade Saint Symphorien. Es besteht aus vier freistehenden und z.T. sehr steilen Tribünen. Besonders ist, dass Ultragruppierungen der Heimmannschaft auf beiden Hintertortribünen beheimatet sind und so Druck von beiden Seiten machen können. Das ist allerdings auch nötig, denn ein großer Teil der Atmosphäre entweicht durch die offenen Ecken.
It’s friday night in the Lorrainese city of Metz. The home team, the FC Metz is currently placing third and takes on Paris Red Star, currently fifth in the French second league, the „Ligue 2“, for a top game. Accordingly full is the stadium, at least 15.000 people find their way to the „Stade Saint Symphorien“, which is located right next to the Mosel. The stadium consists of four sometimes very steep individual stands. What’s so special about the stadium is that the team’s ultras are located on the stands behind both of the goals, enabling them to create pressure from both sides of the pitch. This really is necessary however, since most of the atmosphere fades away through the open corners of the stadium.
Red Star dominiert. Es spielt gefällig ohne jedoch wirkliche Torgefahr zu entwickeln. Die Mannschaft des FC kommt nicht ins Spiel. In der zweiten Halbzeit spielen die Metzer auf die große dreirangige Fantribüne Ouest. Mit Hilfe des engagierten Publikums bauen sie immer mehr Druck auf. In einem Spiel mit vielen Fehlern bleiben Torchancen jedoch Mangelware. So ist es fast folgerichtig, dass die Führung einer Slapstickeinlage der Pariser Verteidigung entspringt. Bei einer eigentlich harmlosen Situation kullert ein Ball durch den Strafraum, der Torwart kollidiert mit einem Verteidiger und fällt beim Aufspringen auch noch über den nächsten. Ein FCM Spieler kann aus spitzen Winkel locker einschieben. Der Torwart muss verletzt raus. Nun dominiert die Heimmannschaft und gewinnt ungefährdet 2-0.
Red Star ist raus aus dem Aufstiegsrennen und wird trotz dreier Siege in den letzten drei Spielen am Ende Fünfter. Der FC Metz bringt den an diesem Abend gewonnen Vorsprung knapp ins Ziel und steigt als Dritter auf — bei gleichem Torverhältnis aufgrund von zwei mehr geschossenen Treffern gegenüber dem AC Le Havre!
Red Star Paris dominates the game, controlling it without creating any big chances however. The FC Metz’s team is unable to keep up. In second half, the FC Metz plays towards the big fan stand in the stadium consisting of three columns. With support from the enthusiastic fans, they are able to create more pressure. Due to many bad plays however, scoring attempts are rather rare. It’s almost logical that the first goal of the game happens as a result of an act of tomfoolery in Red Star Paris’s defense: During a seemingly harmless play, the ball slowly rolls through the penalty area on Red Star Paris’s side. In an attempt to get the ball, the goalkeeper collides with a defender and trips over another while trying to jump back up. A striker from the other team is able to easily push the ball into the box, making it 1-0 Metz. The goalkeeper has to leave the pitch injured. After the first goal, Metz is able to safely dominate the game and ends up winning 2-0.
Due to their defeat, Red Star is unable to compete for the top places anymore, staying fifth despite winning all of their last three games. The FC Metz is able to stay in third place until the end of the season, advancing to the first league due to scoring two more goals than competitor AC Le Havre!
