SC Freiburg – Fortuna Düsseldorf
Schwarzwald-Stadion

Karnevalssamstag.
It’s carnival season as SC Freiburg host Fortuna Düsseldorf as part of the 23rd matchday of the Bundesliga season under favorable weather conditions. The SC Freiburg’s „Dreisamstadion“ is located close to the city of Freiburg itself in a suburban area. If the season happens to finish according to plan, this game will mark the seventh to last game Freiburg will carry out in this particular stadium before approximately moving into a newly constructed stadium at the start of the new 2020/2021 season.
The many, costume wearing spectators in the stadium make for a relaxed atmosphere. There is a sausage stand in front of the stadium, at which you can get a „lange Rote“, a traditional sausage from Freiburg. The sausage is broken over in the middle in order to better fit in the bun with which it is commonly served. The French influence on the Region is illustrated by the fact that you can alternatively acquire Merguez sausages. And even though the stand serves tasty „Tannenzäpfle“ beer, many local spectators seem to opt to drink wine instead.

The southern stand of the sold out stadium provides us with an excellent view on the game, as well as on parts of the black forest behind the stadium, being located exceptionally close to the pitch. With only a few minor exceptions, the atmosphere is almost exclusively created in the northern stand and stays modest throughout the game, in spite of a less than satisfying performance from the home side, who concede a 2 – 0 loss to the visitors and could seemingly play on for hours on end and not score a single goal.

Alfred and his son Frank regularly visit Fortuna Düsseldorf’s games together, occasionally watching away games as well. Having supported his club since 1970, Alfred even got to witness Düsseldorf’s legendary European Cup Winner’s Cup final against Barcelona in 1979 live in Basel. Today, he’s wearing a Moroccan caftan. Meanwhile, Frank is inconsolable about having left his fake moustache to go along with his costume at home.

Fortuna Fans, Schwarzwald-Stadion

Rolf was born in Düsseldorf but has since moved to Kassel, where he’s now been living for a long time. Though he usually still goes back to Düsseldorf annually to celebrate carnival, he’s making an exception this year by instead visiting his son in Freiburg, as well as of course Fortuna Düsseldorf.

According to himself, long time Fortuna Düsseldorf supporter Peter from the town of Rottweil is officially his club’s farthest traveling supporter. He’s watching today’s game along with his good friend Sebastian, who’s an SC Freiburg club member.

Nathy and Marco are utilizing their away trip to enjoy a leisurely weekend in Freiburg together.

Alessandro, Esprit Arena

Alessandro always wears a new hat every season. Last season for instance, he wore a striped red and white cylinder.
He bought his current hat at the kitesurfing world championship in St. Peter Ording. For the first game of the season against Cottbus, his hat brought him luck as his team managed to win 1-0. Due to the weather being sunny that day, he didn’t wear his hat to the next game against Cologne, which ended up being a draw. Hence the hat is back today, despite the warm temperature. However, Fortuna Düsseldorf still ends up unluckily losing the game against 1860 Munich 1-2.

The stadium’s roof was open and the atmosphere was great as Fortuna Düsseldorf took on 1860 Munich at home. However, defender Tobias Levels was mercilessly booed at by the majority of his own supporters for making a mistake that lead to the home team conceding a goal, which also ended up being the matchwinner for Munich as they end up winning 2-1.

Nico, Esprit Arena

As a kid, Nico used to slip through the fence at the old stadium to watch Fortuna Düsseldorf’s games. He had his jacket made for him out of an old banner on the occasion of his team taking on Hamburg in the German domestic cup.

Thomas, Esprit Arena

The first game Thomas watched was a 3-1 win over MSV Duisburg. He’s been a supporter since forever, having watched his team play as low as fourth division and even owning a piece of the pitch from Düsseldorf’s old stadium called „Rheinstadion“. He got his jacket 15 years ago, during the season of 97/98.

Martin, Esprit Arena

Martin is from the nearby city of Mülheim and has been a regular for 12 years, also going to Fortuna Düsseldorf’s away games. He is happy that his team never had to take on the team of his home town when playing in the lower divisions. His sweater was made for him by his mother as a christmas present.
