Sascha, Veltins Arena

Sascha wears scarfs and a vest too every game. His old vest eventually dissolved after having been worn too much. He sewed all of the patches he collected over the years onto his new one.
Prior to the domestic cup final against Bayer Leverkusen, Sascha played a role in a short feature called „Mythos in Blau-Weiß“. After having finished the filming of his scene, Sascha still went to the next setting with the team, which turned out to be the Gerald Asamoah’s apartment. This wasn’t a problem but rather quite the contrary, as Sascha is still in contact with the star player from time to time since then.

Björn has been a Schalke supporter for 25 long years now. He always wears a jersey and scarf to the stadium, while he only got the hat from a friend’s mother two weeks ago, who sewed it for him. In addition, he also wears the same shoes that have previously brought him and the team luck for away games against both Dortmund and Arsenal this winter.

Marvin, Christian and Nils have been best friends for years. And though in friendships of this magnitude, football can be a quite controvesial topic at times, these three don’t have to worry about that issue, since they are all supporters of the same team after all. Each one of the three has discovered their passion for Schalke respectively throughout the mid 90s – since then, Marvin, Christian and Nils are all Schalke supporters.
In addition, Marvin has to decided to join a group of fans about ten years ago that, to his regret, are becoming extinct: he decided to wear a traditional vest. Below his vest, he likes to wear a sweater made by his mother.

On this afteernoon, their team is facing the Eintracht Frankfurt in the Veltins Arena. Over the course of the match, Schalke’s Ultras ignite tremendous pyrotechnics and are quickly being booed off by other spectators in response. Several weeks ago, numerous Ultras have faced stadium entry denials for up to three years as part of the aftermath of the derby against Dortmund. The game against Frankfurt will have been their last match for quite a while and their goodbye is accordingly aggressive. Marvin shows at least some sympathy for the Ultras – he understands their actions as being a protest. After all, they didn’t cause any serious trouble or did anybody any harm to deserve the judgement. Three years of being denied the entry to the stadium are justified by the fact that the fans have traveled to Dortmund independently despite having been told otherwise by the police in advance – a harsh decision.
The fact that the actions of the fans are meant to be a form of protesting is going to be completely left out of the news reports, and the whistling and booing of most spectators in response to the actions imply that far from everybody is looking at the situation from a neutral point of view. Instead, the booing majority follows the biased opinons presented by mainstream media, which dramatizes rather harmless actions to the extreme, heavily weighing in on safety measures becoming continuously more strict.

Niko and Ralf have both traveled here from Mülheim. Ralf has been owning a season ticket since 1994 and used to watch a lot of away games as well. In addition to pictures of his kids, he carries a photo of himself in the Meazza stadium at the UEFA Cup final of 1997 in his wallet. He’s wearing a good old R’activ jersey from the early 90s, „Just no Gazprom please“, and a blue and white hat knitted by his wife, who is also a Schalke supporter. She recently made a similar hat for Niko as well, which he sadly didn’t bring today. Instead, the Champion’s league away match enthusiast is wearing a scarf knitted by his mother. „She neither loves football nor Schalke, but she loves her children all the more“.
