Leeds United – Brighton & Hove Albion || Elland Road in Leeds, England

Vor dem ersten Saisonspiel in der Football League Championship, der englischen zweiten Liga, ist die Atmosphäre an der Elland Road entspannt und erwartungsfroh. Schon zwei Stunden vor dem Anpfiff strömen die Menschen. Angesprochen auf ihre Erwartungen reden fast alle vom Aufstieg in die Premier League. Vor den offiziellen Bars am Stadion und dem Fish and Chips Laden sind lange Schlangen. Wir entscheiden uns für einen Cheeseburger von einer der Buden etwas weiter entfernt.
The atmosphere at Elland Road on this first matchday of the Football League Championship is relaxed and full of anticipaton as even two hours before kickoff, the supporters are already coming in. When asked about their expectations for this season, the majority of supporters name promotion to the Premier League. The lineups at bars and Fish and Chip stands in and around the stadium are long, so we decide to get a cheeseburger at another place a bit further away from the stadium instead. 
Das Stadion ist mit knapp 34.000 Zuschauern nahezu ausverkauft. Nur Im Gästebereich klafft eine große Lücke. Die Stimmung ist intensiv. Die Anfeuerungen, die in den Kurven starten, greifen schnell auf das gesamte Stadion über. Das Publikum reagiert auf die Ereignisse auf dem Spielfeld. Es gibt keine Dauergesänge, Fahnen oder Choreos. Gerufen wird vor allem: »Leeds, Leeds, Leeds« (schnell), »We are Leeds« und »Yorkshire«. Besonders gefällt uns die Beschimpfung des gegnerischen Torwarts beim Abstoß: »You’re shit! Bastard! Aaahhrrr!«, wobei das »Aaahhrrr!« unglaublich laut und bedrohlich klingt, wie ein archaischer Kriegsschrei.
Die Spielanlage von Brighton scheint besser, Leeds besticht durch Kampfgeist und Willen. Als nach mehreren vergebenen Großchancen am Ende des Spiels alles schon auf ein Unentschieden hinauszulaufen scheint, gelingt United in der vierten Minute der Nachspielzeit tatsächlich noch der 2:1 Siegtreffer.
The stadium is almost sold out at around 34,000 spectators, only the guest stand is almost empty. The atmosphere is intense as the cheers coming from the main stand spread throughout the whole stadium and the crowd reacts to what’s happening on the pitch. There are no long chants, banners, or choreos, the main cheers used by the supporters are mostly shouted rapidly and go as follows: „Leeds, Leeds, Leeds“, „We are Leeds“ and „Yorkshire“. We are especially impressed by the insults yelled at the opposing team’s goalkeeper at his goal kicks: „You’re shit! Bastard! Aaahhrrr!“, with the „Aaahhrrr!“ sounding incredibly loud and intimidating, kind of like a battle cry. Brighton seems to be the better teem throughout most of the match but Leeds impresses with great team spirit and determination. After many unused chances, it seems to be a draw as the game closes in, but Leeds surpisingly manages to score a late matchwinner in the last minute of overtime, making the final score 2-1.
