Dauerregen an der Bremer Brücke zum Start ins Fußballjahr 2023. Mitten in einem innerstädtischen Wohngebiet gelegen verströmt das wunderbar enge, traditionsreiche Stadion durch und durch englische Atmosphäre. Die Stimmung ist gut. Besonders gern und ausgiebig wird die VFL Hymne gesungen »Nur für diesen Verein, wolln wir kämpfen und schrein…«
Das Spiel ist trotz der schlechten äußeren Bedingungen auf gutem Niveau – zumindest auf der von uns aus gesehen rechten Platzhälfte. Auf der linken Seite ist so viel Wasser, dass der Ball ab und an in einer Pfütze liegenbleibt, während der Spieler weiterläuft. Die »Wasserschlacht von Frankfurt« ist in aller Munde. Der VFL gewinnt trotz einer zwischenzeitlichen Kölner Drangphase verdient mit 3-1.
A new year of football kicks off in the „Stadion an der Bremer Brücke“ in Osnabrück under rainy weather conditions. The tradition-laden stadium, being located in the midst of an urban residential area, gives off a purely English vibe. The atmosphere is great with the home fans repeatedly singing their clubs hymn.
Luckily the bad weather doesn’t carry over to the pitch as the game is entertaining – to our right at least as the left half of the pitch from our perspective is drenched in water to the point that the ball would sometimes stop rolling in a puddle, causing significant confusion in the players around it. All around us, people draw comparisons to the infamous match between Germany and Poland in the 1974 world cup, dubbed „Die Wasserschlacht von Frankfurt“, the water battle of Frankfurt. Osnabrück comfortably takes it home 3-1 in spite of an occasionally feisty performance by the visiting side from Cologne.
